English Premier League Review

So today was survival sunday for four premier league teams; Sunderland, Hull, Newcastle, and Middlesborough. West Brom was already relegated to the championship. It looked like Newscastle had the best chance to survive after Hull was down one at the KC stadium. However hope for survival for Newcastle United turned south after Aston Villa scored. Sunderland played as though they really wanted to stay up! They came from 3-1 to 3-2 working hard for their loss even though they were destined to stay up. After the full 90mins and added time Newcastle UTD (for the first time) and Middlesbrough were relegated along side of West Brom to the Championship. The two teams that have secured a place in the English Premier League for next season are Wolverhampton and Birmingham City. The third team to join them will be decided tomorrow (05.25.2009) between Sheffield UTD and Burnley. more to come on this tomorrow. Now the big question is will any of the three teams make it back to the EPL. Reading f.c. made a commitment to heading back immediately this season, but came up short in the playoffs. So who do I think will make it? Well most players leave if a team is relegated. Michael Owen (Newcastle UTD) has a great opportunity to leave for Scottish Champions Celtic. If Newcastle lose any of their players they better hope to find excellent replacements. Also they need a manager! Seeing that Alan Shearer is on a temporary basis will Joe Kinnear return? Also because of thier relegation I believe there will be a backlash against owner Mike Ashley. Ashley has been viewed by the supporter as a non-sense Newcastle fan and needs to be replaced. So will Newcastle return? MAYBE. How about Middlesborough? Well they could sack manager Gareth Southgate and maybe replace him with Alan Curbishly???!!! I think Curbishly would make a great fit for Middlesbrough relatively young squad. There Keeper seems to be off in every game. Perhaps a new defense is what Middlesborough need, then again they would also need better middlefielders. So can Middlesbrough make it back? The Championship would seem a good fit for boro. Birmingham made it out so why can't they? The teams in the Championship are very experienced. Also Leister and Peterbrough (who secured promotion from League one to the Championship) look big contenders. Especially Peterbrough who were promoted last season to league one and then this season promoted to the Championship. Could they make it to the Premier League? No, not next season. There are too many experienced teams out there in the Championship like Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, now Newcastle, West Brom, Preston, middlesbrough, Cardiff and lots more) However theres a first for everything, but highly unlikely. Back to Middlesbrough, they won't make it back if their keeper does not improve. Boro survived last season becuase of Mark Schwartzer. With him gone they were obviously relegated. Now West Brom, their manager is very experience in the Championship. However he lost a lot of player during the summer transfer window during the summer of 08. WBA lost their top scorer, goal keeper, and other players which is why they were relegated. Not a good idea of getting rid of your best players right directly after promotion. This season has been excellent. Liverpool made it even close to the Premier League Title only falling short to the Champions, Manchester UTD. During the transfer window it would be interesting who Liverpool manager Rafa Benetiz will sell and bring in. I think the squad he has is the best one yet, but they need another striker like Fernando Torres. Chelsea has seen a mixed season with the sacking of Luis Felipe Scolari and the interm management of Guus Hiddinks. Also a controversal Champions League match against Barcalona, I think an FA cup win against Everton will make it all up. Arsenal nearly missed out on Champions League Footbal against Aston Villa. But do Villa fans really want to be in the Champions League group stages? I mean after they couldn't handle UEFA european cup (I think thats whats it called). Next season tends to be interesting with new signings for the big four, Sunderland recieving a big money boost, Manchester City planning to bring in quality players through their owners big purses, and Tottenham who have improved greatly under Harry Redknapp. Next season will be interesting with Chelsea expecting a new manager and maybe Arsenal id Arsene Wenger leaves for Real Madrid (unlikely according to Wenger). So overall brilliant season! Heres the final table of the 2008-2009 Premier League Season:

LATE NIGHT LAUGHS - ratings

In the past few months Late Night has seen a big change with the change of hosts on NBC's "Late Night" and change is show format with NBC's "Last Call with Carson Daly. However all that matters are the ratings that follow. NBC has been the ratings king being led by "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. When Conan O'Brien held the reign of Late Night succeeding David Letterman (after CBS promised him an earlier time slot back in the early 90's) has been in a ratings fight with CBS's the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. However recently Jimmy Fallon came in to take over "Late Night" as Conan prepares to host the "Tonight Show" as Jay prepares to how the "Jay Leno Show" in the fall on NBC at 10pm. WOW LOTS OF CHANGES. BUT THATS NOT IT. Carson Daly has decided to take his show on the road, thus changing the format of his show. There has been a lot of positive reaction to the change in format. Now back to Jimmy Fallon and his ratings. In the first couple of week Fallon topped Ferguson with over two million viewers versus Ferguson's 1.9 million. Also Fallon has been able to retain at least 50% of Leno's audience. However in May Fallon's numbers cooled as his ratings began to decline. During the week of May 8th Ferguson beat Fallon in total viewers and virtually tied Fallon in the key demographics. WTF happened?! Well IDK, if the episodes that appeared during the week of May 8th were repeat episodes than ok! New numbers are out and heres the break down:

11:35pm
NBC's Tonight Show 5.0 million viewers
ABC's Nightline 3.8 million Viewers
CBS's Late Show 3.7 million viewers

*Notice Night Line a news division of ABC news is beating David Letterman's show. CBS's competition at that time is mostly with ABC. However when Conan takes over in June will there be a ratings change? Will the Tonight Show lose viewers? I think the first night there will be interest to see what Conan does. If he hits it out of the park then the Tonight Show will continue to beat ABC and CBS. However if he dosen't Letterman could see a possible chance at stealing away O'Brien's audience.*

12:35am
NBC's Late Night 2.1 million viewers
CBS's Late Late Show 1.9 million viewers
ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live 1.7 million viewers
*note Kimmel's show begins at midnight exactly*

1:35am
NBC's Last Call 1.1 million viewers

CABLE RATINGS

The Daily Show 1.5 million viewers
The Colbert Report 1.1 million viewers

Imagine if Stewart and Colbert where on basic TV, their ratings would be huge!

NBC's Saturday Night Live also had a huge ratings gain! it had 7.3 million viewers
*note Fox's Mad tv has been canceled....

NBC's TODAY is high ratings day

The Today show continues to dominate its competition. Today led with 5.7 million followed by ABC's Good Morning America 4.3 million and CBS's the early show had 2.9 million viewers. Now what about Cable news. Well no mater how you look at it, Cable news combined would still be behind NBC's Today Show. Fox news "Fox and Friends 1 million viewers. CNN's American Morning had 393,000 viewers. MSNBC's "Morning Joe had 360,000 viewers. Headline News' Morning Express with Robin Meade had 247,000 viewers. CNBC's Squawk Box had 162,000 viewers. Fox Business Channel's Money for breakfast had no numbers but my guess is that is had less than 15,000 viewers because its widely unavailable and the recent numbers came out long ago. FBN has a long way to go if it wants to catch CNBC.

MEET THE PRESS, meet huge ratings

MEET THE PRESS continues its domination of the sunday morning public affairs forum. MEET THE PRESS had 3.2 million viewers tune in. I like those numbers because David Gregory is doing a great job. He has had tough shoes to fill that of Tim Russert and interm host Tom Brokaw. Gregory continues to use his tough questioning approach which makes it more fasinating to watch each week. Gregory's first show on MSNBC "Race for the White House" greatly improved the 6pm timeslot of the former MSNBC host/contributor Tucker Carlson's "Tucker, Live". On MSNBC he followed the dame ratings trend of increasing each week. His first show averaged over 500,000 viewers. As the elections approached the ratings went higher however the network at 6pm still remained in 3rd place behind CNN's the situation room and way behind Fox news' special report. Despite the moderate ratings gain I believe Gregory's debut as a host really prepared him for the full time job of MEET THE PRESS. I will continue to watch the show because Gregory always has interesting guest and a variety of people to fill in his roundtable. I don't quiet like ABC's "This Week" because the roundtable portion of the show features the same people with the same point of view. CBS' "Face the Nation" is ABC's competition because on occasion Face the nation sometimes beats This Week. As for Fox's "Fox News Sunday", WTF happened to that show?! The ratings are horrible, it used to beat ABC before now its the least watched sunday morning public affairs forum. Perhaps people find a distained distrust among the Fox news family. Besides only conservatives watch Fox, liberals watch ABC and moderates like me watch MEET THE PRESS. AGAIN thats my opinion. Heres the full ratings break down from last week:

show audience size
NBC's MEET THE PRESS 3.3 million
ABC's THIS WEEK 2.8 million
CBS's FACE THE NATION 2.1 million
Fox's Fox News Sunday 1.3 million

Glenn Beck, the view of a liar

A couple of days ago, Glenn Beck appeared on "The View". He was immediately called out regarding an incident on a train where we saw Barbara Walters and Whoppy Goldberg. *I'll check the spelling later*. Check out the incident:

Shows what Glenn Beck is all about. Obviously he would be willing to manipulate anything if it means ratings. No matter how insulting he can be he won't care. Why do people watch/listen to this guy? Probably because they're hoping for a good laugh after his crying incident. More on Beck's lies later on....

UPDATE: Lawrence O'Donnell should have an MSNBC show

Lawrence O'Donnell is an MSNBC contributor and should have his own show on MSNBC.
He asks a lot of tough questions check it out as he (O'Donnell) filled in for MSNBC's Ed Schultz:

Another great example is when O'Donnell debated Pat Buchanan:

the new MSNBC daytime....will people watch?

Dylan Ratigan, former CNBC host is now moving to a new part of the NBC News Franchise. Ratigan who was suspected with a move to ABC will remain at NBC after his CNBC contract expired. Ratigan will host a two hour show after MSNBC's Morning Joe with Joe Scarborough. I think this move by MSNBC is a brilliant one. Sure Ratigan will steal away some of CNBC's audience but he will be a big improvement to the networks daytime newscast which currently falls behind against CNN and way WAY behind Fox. Now will the move overtake either networks? Time will tell, MSNBC is indeed providing its audience a different kind of daytime news. I think MSNBC can narrow down the lead of CNN and distance itself further away from Headline News. Some say he (Ratigan) will be the Keith Olbermann of daytime. So far the Ratigan move is brilliant. However thats not the only change to MSNBC....

Ratigan on his former show "Fast Money" on CNBC.

Nancy Snyderman, MSNBC and NBC's health correspondent will host her own health hour on MSNBC from noon-1pm ET. This is indeed a different approach one thats so different most networks would consider airing such a show on the weekend. Now will this new hour change ratings???? Perhaps if their are parnoid health freaks out there. This show does present a change but how long until viewers get sick about hearing about health? Then again this could turn out to be a huge success because it is so different. After all it worked for Fox. They have a one hour business show, newscast, law show, and about three hours of news commentary. MSNBC is on the right track in terms of variety. However they need more exciting personalities in their broadcast. These people need to be exciting, intelligent but not corny.

MSNBC should consider taking out Andrea Mitchell's show at 1pmET. WHY???? She seems uneasy when conducting her interviews, shes better at reporting and uncovering newsworthy items. MSNBC should consider giving Carlos Watson his own show or perhaps Peter Alexander. They should bring back Amy Robach, however she's already doing a great job on NBC's Weekend Today so I doubt they'll move her. Overall MSNBC daytime is moving in the right direction in my opinion by offering a little variety. BUT the big important thing....will people be watching???? The move will occur around the end of June of this year.

UPDATE: CNBC "On the Money"

The day before during the Obama news Conference, CNBC's On the Money averaged a viewership of over one million. Today the same show in the same timeslot averaged a viewership of less than 100,000, 91,000 to be exact (I think the way its put out now is really confusing) Now I don't know if the 1,000,000+ is a typo but I'll check again. But losing more than 900,000 in one day is not good. Still I'll double check. What happened, if thats true????

MSNBC advertising

Has anyone who watches MSNBC ever notice how Headline News and Fox News advertise on MSNBC. Recently I saw an advertisement for HLN's "Morning Express" during MSNBC's popular show Countdown. Also, I hear Fair and Balance (not really), Fox News on MSNBC. Can someone tell me if MSNBC appears on CNN, HLN, or MSNBC? I think its really odd how other networks advertise on MSNBC

Cable News Ratings for Obama Primetime News Confrence

During the primetime coverage on NBC, ABC, CBS, all averaged 6 million viewers each with NBC making a slight lead. Now what about Cable news? Fox News: 2,626,000. CNN: 2,176,000. MSNBC: 1,780,000. However the analysis part of each network changed. Fox aired a special edition of the O'Reilly Factor with a viewership of 3,392,000. CNN dropped with a special edition of a report card type show with 1,641,000. MSNBC aired Countdown and recieved 1,334,000. Hannity (FNC) got 2,566,000. MSNBC aired Rachel Maddow and she edged CNN. Maddow got 1,112,000 while CNN dropped BIG to 922,000. BUT the big SURPRISE is CNBC! I wonder what happened???? During the Obama press conference CNBC total viewership was a mere 243,000. BUT the show "On the Money" which aired at 10pm BEAT CNN with 1,049,000. That pretty good for CNBC if you asked me :) So ratings wise, people say that MSNBC would have more viewers if they had hosts who were less partian. That would be good but in recent ratings, MSNBC has had good numbers, in the analysis portion of the networks coverage. It would be nice if MSNBC was more towards the middle, but I think the network is fine where it currently is. BUT it should consider advertising the network more.

President Obama ignores Fox?

I'm not sure but it seemed during the presidents primetime news confrence he did not pick fox. I'm not completely sure if he ignored fox correspondent Major Garrett (I think that's his name), I'll have to recap the meeting. But if he did its probably because Fox entertainment chose to air an episode of "lie to me" instead of the 100 day landmark. More to come!
